Baby and Childrens Footwear

Baby and Childrens Footwear

It hardly seems fair that the second you buy your growing child a pair of new shoes that they grow out of them! One of the things I see people grabbing up at yardsales is kids shoes!

And why not? Considering what new childrens footwear costs these days, and how fast they grow out of them, it sometimes just makes sense to buy used (at least before they get big enough to start noticing that they're always wearing "someone elses' stuff" - you moms know what I mean!).

Sigh. It's a tough call... I was brought up on hand-me-downs. Everytime the girls across the street got THEIR new clothes, my mom would march into my bedroom with bags and bags full of the neighbors' cast-offs. (Another sigh...) So, that means I always had "last year's" styles, while THEY got all the cool new styles.

Alas, somehow I made it through! :)

  1. I first began wearing moccasin shoes when I worked at the Lane Guest Ranch in Allenspark, CO. Now this brings back memories!

    Memories! Precious memories...
Just down the road (Route 7, towards Estes Park, and at the base of Longs Peak), there was a great store called Charles Eagle Plume. We frequently took our guest ranch visitors over to Charles Eagle Plume's place because it was so much more than a tourist shop. It was an absolutely amazing museum, chock full of Native American arts and crafts, jewelry, rugs, artwork - you name it!

PLUS, there was the added bonus of being able to talk with Charles Eagle Plume himself - who, in his later years was still just as cheerful and engaging as he must have been in younger years. A visit with Charles Eagle Plume was a real "feel good" experience - he would tell jokes and stories with a twinkle in his eyes that was irresistable.

And so was his shop! (Note: Charles has been gone from this world since 1992, but his shop still thrives.) Anyway, I bought my very first pair of moccasins at Charles Eagle Plumes, and wore them until there was nothing left of them. Regrettably, I do not know who made my wonderful moccasin shoes, and I never thought to take photos of them. They were so incredibly comfortable, that I loved them from the start.

Mocassins and their related mukluk footwear have a long history in North America. While most people identify moccasins with Native American culture, many do not know that the creation of moccasins is quite the wonderful artform, and beautiful examples can be seen by doing a search for authentic moccasins. Did you know that one way in which Native Americans could differentiate between one tribe and another was by their moccasin patterns and designs?

  2. Hi all... Just wanted to remind you to check out the prices on Amazon for kids shoes as well! I am absolutely amazed at how inexpensive you can get shoes there! :) Hugs, Kath

  3. Hi everyone!

I'd like to invite you to offer your own suggestions as to how parents and others are working to save on their kids shoes and clothes. Obviously, here at Save On Kidswear, I advertise and market for Magic Kids as well as various footwear sites; however, I am also aware that there is a need to help one another save resources and be creative during challenging times. Earlier on this page, I mentioned a few ideas - but I'd like to hear from you. If you have questions, feel free to submit them as well. I'll do my best to research the answer - and maybe one of our other readers might have the answer as well.

I check into the page frequently, and will be publishing your comments and questions by hand. Quick guidelines: You are welcome to submit your own URLs as part of this blog; however, if there is a link or content that I feel is "questionable" or appears to be "comment spam," I will simply delete the post. This is a family oriented site, so let's keep it clean and professional. Thanks!

Creative Ideas That Also Save Money

Anyway, I got to thinking about how people could still give their kids neat things - less expensively - and still make the kids enjoy the experience.

Some of my ideas about getting kids shoes and other items without breaking the bank include:
1) Host a "clothing and shoe exchange" party and invite moms and kids from a few different age-groups, and moms-to-be to participate. Everyone should bring an item or 2 of clothing and shoes that are in good shape. They can be displayed on a table so that guests can walk around and choose. Obviously, you'd have to make up a few rules - for example - you wouldn't want to have one "clothes hog" take a bunch of stuff without regard for someone else. Maybe, if there is someone that doesn't have a lot to share or exchange, but NEEDS clothes/shoes, that person could bring light refreshments in lieu of clothing/shoes.

2) Go to a consignment shop in your area and ask if there is a "swap" policy - in other words, perhaps instead of buying or selling clothes via the consigment shop, the customer can exchange some of his/her own child's clothing or shoes for something at the shop. Every consignment shop is different, and it doesn't hurt to ask!

3) Put an ad on CraigsList stating that you are looking for "boys clothes needed, sizes ..." or "girls clothes needed, sizes..." etc . Please folks: Word of Caution here: Do NOT put your email address directly in the ad. Allow CraigsList to "anonymize" your email address so that you aren't victimized by scammers and spammers. Personally, I do not put my phone number in CraigsList ads either - but that's just me...
